We live in a world of failure and I think we're all heartily sick of it. The systems we build hurt people, both when they work as designed and when they break. Some of those failures are because of bugs, some because of design flaws, but so many of our failures are because we didn't build for the complex spectrum which constitutes actual humanity. People are not all the same. They don't have the same desires or needs or threats. We, as security and privacy professionals, are not living up to our ethical obligations when we fail to build with respect for humans. It requires more comfort with ambiguity. It requires putting aside purity. But this is how we can be truly effective.
